Statement by Dr. Arjun Karki at the Seminar on Financing Development in the LDCs: Trends & Prospects
New York, 18 November 2008

Good morning,

UN High Representative for the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, Mr Cheick Sidi Diarra, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to begin my presentation, first and foremost, by thanking all participants and fellow panelists who have assembled today to discuss the importance, challenges and opportunities for financing development in the world’s poorest 49 countries - the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

With less than two years remaining to meet the deadline of 2010, for the realization of the Brussels Programme of Action (BPoA) for the LDCs, it is clear that most of the objectives will not be met. Additionally, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – some of which are also included in the BPoA - will not be achieved in full if not realized in the LDCs. And, the failure to achieve the MDGs in these countries will be a failure of the international community to honor its commitments to around 800 million people living in LDCs, majority in poverty deprived of development.

Asia Regional Consultation on Least Developed Country (LDC) Issues kicked off

DSC_011608 Nov 2008, Kathmandu.

The Asia regional consultation on LDC issues has began on 8th November 2008 to assess the effective implementation of the BPoA including other internationally agreed development goals towards achieving the overarching objective of poverty reduction and sustainable development in the Asian LDCs. The consultation started with the message that an increase in number of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) from 24 in 1971 to 49 today, and ironically, after three decades of special development attention, three UN LDC consultations and three specific Programmes of Action, clearly proves the failure of existing development paradigms to effectively address the development challenges and constraints in these poorest countries. There are now 33 LDCs in Africa, 15 in Asia and 1 in the Caribbean that house 750 million people.
