ECOSOC Holds Panel Discussion on Mobilizing Resources for Poverty -

The Economic and Social Council this afternoon concluded its general discussion on the review and coordination of the implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010 and then held a panel discussion on the issue of mobilizing resources and creating an enabling environment for poverty eradication in the least developed countries, including implementation of the 2004 ministerial declaration.

Conference on Democracy, Development and Peace in Asia

An international consortium of Civil Society Organisations comprised of LDC Watch, South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE), Asian Regional Exchange for New Alternatives (ARENA) and Korea Democratic Foundation (KDF) is going to organise the Asia Regional Conference on Democracy, Development and Peace on 10-12 November 2008 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The objective of the conference is to contribute towards strengthening democracy, sustainable development and peace in Asia. The conference is designed to be attended mainly by the delegates from political parties, academia and civil society organisations from across the Asia-Pacific region. They also include policy makers, planners and development practitioners. Statement by LDC Watch at the UN High Level Event on the MDGs, New York, 25 September 2008

Current development models and policies have completely failed the world’s poorest countries – the least developed countries (LDCs). The LDCs Groupwas established by the UN in 1971 in recognition of the specific needs and constraints facing the world’s poorest countries, and therefore the need for specific strategies for these countries. “The fact that the number of LDCs has increased from 24 to 49 presently is proof enough”, says Dr Arjun Karki, Chair of LDC Watch. According to UNCTAD, although LDCs are achieving record rates of economic growth this is not benefiting those living in poverty.

Civil Society Groups Pose challenges at Ghana Forum on Aid

MANILA, Philippines - As a three-day high-level forum on aid starts in Ghana, various groups posed seven challenges to ministers and heads of financial institutions about the effectiveness of international aid interventions. The groups, in a statement, issued the challenges as officials from 100 countries prepared to attend the third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana Sept. 2 to 4.

LDCs’ time to revisit policies
Around 780 million people of the mother-earth are living in the poorest countries of the world. These countries are officially described as the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). They are continuously struggling against hunger, poverty and disparity. Though they represent 11 % of the world population, which are living in 49 LDCs', they have the stake of less than 5% of the global resources.
